Playhouse Mini Welcome Mat

I shared with you the other day how I bought a playhouse for the Doodles instead of a dog house. They love playing in and running through the house, plus we keep a large bucket full of tennis balls inside and the playhouse protects the balls from getting wet when it rains.

The playhouse is adorable on its own, but when we redid the landscaping in my backyard we gave the house a foundation using 16″ x 16″ pavers and added an extra one in front of the door. Every time I looked at that paver in front of the door I kept thinking the house was missing something and it finally dawned on me that it need a welcome mat! I searched online, but the playhouse accessories market is seriously underserved (hello! we need OPTIONS retailers – think window boxes, welcome mats, mini wreaths!) and I could not find a single mini welcome mat, so I did what any DIY Maven would and brainstormed how to make one.

Doormat

Box Cutter

Silver Sharpie

Scissors

Ruler

Sharpie Oil Based Paint Pen

  1. You will need to cut the doormat into four equal rectangles to make the mini welcome mat. Measure the length of the doormat, divide measurement in half and using your ruler and Sharpie marker make a line in the center of the doormat. Repeat this for the width.
  2. Using your ruler and box cutter, score the lines you drew.
  3. Use the scissors to finish cutting through the fibers of the doormat. You will end up with four mini doormats when you are done cutting.
  4. Take one of the mini doormats and using Sharpie Oil Based Paint Pen write the word “welcome” on your doormat. Sketch it out first with the paint pen and then go back over it using a stippling (push the pen up and down) motion to fill out the word until it is the thickness and color that you prefer.

I saved the other three pieces of the doormat and plan to create some seasonal doormats for the holidays or maybe one that says a cute phrase!
